Syllabus for English 111: College Reading & Writing

Compare/Contrast Group Work

Understanding the relationship of entities is important when analyzing text, visual image, or oral speech. This is a handout that guides my students through a small-group class activity, geared at exercising their ability to find, see, and analyze these relationships.

Rhetorical Analysis handout

Without understanding why an effective argument works, students cannot consciously create logical and effective arguments of their own. This handout outlines the elements of rhetorical analysis. It also presents an outline of Rogerian argument and Toulmin logic.

This I Believe... paper assignment

My students' final paper assignment asks them to consider what it is that they believe after our semester-long journey together. They not only write their statement of belief, they also make an audio recording that is uploaded onto my discussion page:

Paragraphing handout

A functional paragraph is a necessary component of effective writing. Many students overlook the importance of a paragraph's structure. It is for this reason that I follow use this handout in conjunction with lessons that focus on  paragraphing. My students are able to use this handout as a reference guide.

Sentence Variation handout

Many students struggle with syntax, which is why I put together a handout that outlines - with examples - various sentence forms while offering key advice on why and how to vary their sentences when they are writing.
